The SAHD Standard™
A professional framework for safety, structure and relationship.
What is the SAHD Standard™?
The SAHD Standard™ is an ethological and relationship-focused framework describing how a dog’s nervous system, social nature and environment may influence behaviour over time. It sets out principles for safety, structure and interaction that inform stable and lasting change in everyday life.
Its purpose is to support consistency in assessment, analysis and practical steps, while taking account of each dog’s age, breed, circumstances and individual situation. It serves as a shared reference for how behaviour is understood, considered and developed in practice.
Stability and structure are central to a relationship—and can help create a safer everyday life.
Safety, structure and relationship
SAHD’s framework places safety, predictability and a clear relationship at the centre of everyday life with a dog. The dog’s behaviour is considered in context, with attention to the conditions in which it lives and the interaction between dog and people.
Safety
Consider what helps the dog experience its surroundings as manageable and predictable.
Structure
Use clear, consistent everyday frameworks that support orientation and stability.
Relationship
Understand interaction and communication as part of the dog’s everyday experience.
How the framework is used
The Standard™ informs professional assessment and the planning of practical guidance. It is not presented here as a one-size-fits-all programme; the dog’s individual characteristics, experience and environment remain relevant to the assessment.
